In 1996, it was rumored that Conrail was seeking a buyer for all their lines in West and Central Michigan. By design or coincidence, the track layout at Plainwell was cleaned up at this time. The sidings on the east and west sides of the main were removed. These had been only used a few times a year and by track crews at that. Maybe the switches were wanted elsewhere. The photos below show the sidings being dismantled by a contractor.
