What are Platform Tickets?
Platform tickets were a phenomena of British Railways. For a nominal sum, you bought a ticket from a machine in the booking office of the station and this allowed you to spend one hour on the platforms of said station. In theory, the ticket collector would notch your platform ticket around the edge corresponding to the hour of the day you presented it to him. However, this rarely happened in the 1970's (you can see this on the Welwyn North ticket below). You were also supposed to turn in the ticket to the ticket collector but these collectors were only present when a passenger train was arriving, so all railway fans waited until there were no trains due and walked out with ticket intact.
Here are some platform tickets from the 1970's era. You can see there were different formats, probably dependent upon the age of the ticket machine.
